The NU-CCNE is administered through the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center (RHLCCC), allowing for full integration of investigators and facilities in adademic and clinical departments at the university together with physicians at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and investigators at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare, an affiliate of Northwestern University. Taken together, these units form a comprehensive investigative team which has as a common goal the objectives of achieving milestones.
Primary leadership of the NU-CCNE is provided by the Principal Investigator of the NU-CCNE and the Director of the International Institute for Nanotechnology, Chad A. Mirkin. Steven T. Rosen, M.D. and Director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center also plays an important role in the NU-CCNE as a member of the Center Steering Committee and as a resource to ensure the full integration of Center research.
Other key members of the internal leadership team include: Gayle Woloschak, Associate Director of the NU-CCNE; and Kathleen A. Cook, Director of Operations for the NU-CCNE and Director of Operations and Strategic Initiatives for the IIN.
The organizational structure of the NU-CCNE includes the Executive Committee, the Center Steering Committee, and the Technology Council. The roles of each of these groups and a list of their members is given below.
The Executive Committee meets monthly to discuss all matters pertinent to the achievement of program goals and realization of translational objectives, including the retention, termination, or replacement of research projects; the operation of the core facilities and their utilization by program members; the effectiveness of shared facilities used by CCNE participants; selection and the implementation of the pilot programs; intra- and inter-CCNE collaborations; development and promotion of dissemination activities; and interactions with other CCNE components. The recommendations of the Center Steering Committee will be implemented by the Executive Committee.
Members of the Executive Committee are:
Chad A. Mirkin, Ph.D., Director CCNE and Director IIN
Steven T. Rosen, M.D., Director RHLCCC
Gayle Woloschak, Ph.D., Associate Director CCNE
Kathleen A Cook, M.B.A., Director Operations CCNE and Dir.Operations & Strategic Initiatives IIN
The CSC consists of nationally recognized business and scientific advisors, a public/advocate representative, and member of the National Cancer Institute. This group meets once a year and functions as a source of guidance and strategy for the NU-CCNE. The committee uses a time-limited phase review process in project evaluation, which uses both activity-based and time-based checkpoints. If specific milestones that require decisions on project direction are reached within a set time frame, the project is reviewed when the milestones are reached. If the project reaches the time limit without achieving the milestones, the project is still reviewed for technical viability and direction.
Current members of the CSC are:
William Beck, Professor, University of Illinois at Chicago, Biopharmaceutical Sciences
Barry Dowell, Abbott Diagnostics Division Abbott Laboratories, Cancer Core R & D
Ann Lurie, President, Ann and Robert H. Lurie Foundation
Arthur Pancoe, President, Pancoe Nakovich Wealth Management
Andrew Senyei, M.D., General Partner, Enterprise Partners VC

The Council meets annually, to evaluate and provide objective advice about the CCNE’s goals and objectives and to review the status of the research projects, use of shared research core facilities, and administrative operations. After the meeting, tthe Council works with the CSC to develop a written report to the NU- CCNE Director and members of the Executive Committeer. In addition to the annual meeting, Council members are available to the Director on an ad hoc basis for discussion and guidance about specific issues that may arise
